One Planet Development

Fase de iniciativa: Fase de conceção

Analysis and transferability of the One Planet Development Model for sustainable land use and housing

One Planet Development

This initiative examines the One Planet Development (OPD) model from Wales as an integrated approach to sustainable land use, housing and self-sufficiency, and analyses its potential applicability to the Luxembourg context.

OPD is a regulated model that combines residential and economic activities on agricultural land with strict sustainability criteria. The initiative analyses the underlying principles, in particular the interconnection of land use, food production, energy self-sufficiency, resource cycles and ecological site development.

A key focus is on the systematic examination of the legal, planning and ecological framework conditions that enable the model. To this end, existing documentation, case studies and projects are evaluated and presented in a structured manner.

Furthermore, the potential and limitations of applying this model to Luxembourg are examined. This encompasses, in particular, issues relating to spatial planning, agricultural legislation, residential use in rural areas, and requirements for sustainable land use and self-sufficiency.

The initiative sees itself as an analytical and interdisciplinary project bridging research, planning and practice. The aim is to foster a better understanding of integrated land-use models and to provide a foundation for potential pilot projects or further policy developments.

In addition, the initiative aims to establish platforms for exchange with stakeholders from agriculture, planning, civil society and sustainable housing projects to discuss and further develop findings.

In the long term, the initiative aims to help open up new spaces for thinking and action regarding integrated, sustainable forms of living and settlement.

Como é que a iniciativa é financiada?

The initiative is currently in a development and analysis phase and is not institutionally funded. Its activities rely on voluntary work, independent research and the voluntary commitment of those involved. There are currently no fixed income streams, funding structures or institutional sources of funding. The work is carried out as part of a civil society initiative of a non-commercial nature. In the future, project-related funding, research collaborations or public support programmes may become relevant for analysis and pilot activities. The aim is to establish a transparent and independent structure for the further development of knowledge and models of sustainable land use.

Existem outros parceiros ou doadores associados à vossa iniciativa?

At present, there are no permanent financial partners or institutional funders. The initiative is developing within an open civil society context and is in dialogue with stakeholders from the fields of sustainable agriculture, permaculture, SOLAWI, spatial planning, and alternative housing and land-use projects across Europe. Collaborations with research, practical and civil society initiatives are envisaged for the future, but are not currently formalised or financially committed.

Oportunidades de participação

The initiative offers various opportunities for public participation in the analysis and further development of the One Planet Development (OPD) model and similar integrated land and settlement approaches.

Those interested can contribute to the research, collection and structuring of information on OPD projects and similar international models. This includes the preparation of case studies, the documentation of examples and the analysis of framework conditions in different countries.

Another area of participation involves the joint evaluation and discussion of findings in the context of their applicability to Luxembourg. This includes the exchange of views on legal, planning and environmental aspects of sustainable land use and housing models.

The initiative is open to contributions from research, practice and civil society. Individuals with experience in agriculture, spatial planning, architecture, sustainability or communal housing projects can contribute their knowledge to the analysis.

In addition, one-off or ongoing contributions in the form of writing, research, networking or further development of content are possible. The aim is a collaborative knowledge-building process that makes existing models understandable and develops them further.

Outros

Analysis and documentation of integrated land-use and settlement models, with a focus on their applicability to Luxembourg.

Objectivos

The aim of the initiative is to analyse the One Planet Development (OPD) model as an integrated approach to sustainable land use, housing and self-sufficiency, and to assess its applicability to the Luxembourg context.

In doing so, the structural foundations of the model are to be understood and assessed for their relevance to spatial planning, agriculture, housing and environmental policy in Luxembourg.

A further objective is to collate and systematise existing experiences from OPD projects in Wales in order to highlight success factors, challenges and regulatory frameworks.

Building on this, the project aims to identify opportunities for developing similar integrated models in Luxembourg, particularly in the areas of sustainable settlement forms, small-scale land use and self-sufficiency.

The initiative also aims to promote exchange between relevant stakeholders from planning, agriculture, research and civil society, and to lay the groundwork for future pilot projects or policy developments.

In the long term, it aims to help open up new perspectives for holistic land-use and housing models that more closely integrate ecological limits, social needs and regional resilience.

Efeito

The immediate impact of the initiative lies in the structured analysis and clear presentation of the One Planet Development (OPD) model, along with its core principles and framework conditions.

This provides a clear overview of a complex, integrated land and settlement model that has so far received little systematic attention in German-speaking countries. This facilitates access for interested stakeholders from the fields of agriculture, planning, civil society and politics.

In the short term, existing experiences from OPD projects will be collated, analysed and adapted into a transferable format. This will highlight which elements of the model are functional and what adjustments would be required for other legal and geographical contexts.

The initiative also creates a basis for informed discussions on sustainable land use, integrated housing and self-sufficiency in rural areas. It can thus serve as a reference point for future pilot projects, studies or political debates.

In the medium term, it will help to open up new avenues for thinking and action regarding holistic settlement and agricultural models in Luxembourg.

Grupo-alvo

The initiative is aimed at individuals and organisations that are involved in sustainable land use, integrated housing and economic models, and alternative forms of settlement, or who wish to develop such approaches.

This includes, in particular, stakeholders from the fields of spatial planning, agriculture, regional development and environmental policy who are interested in innovative approaches to land use and housing.

It also appeals to initiatives, project groups and individuals from the fields of sustainable construction, permaculture, self-sufficiency and small-scale agriculture who are seeking new models for living on and with the land.

Another target group comprises researchers, education professionals and civil society organisations working on issues of ecological transformation, food sovereignty and land-use systems.

Furthermore, the initiative is aimed at people who wish to develop concrete projects in the field of integrated land and housing models or who are seeking practical and legal guidance for comparable approaches in their own context.

The initiative sees itself as an interface between analysis, practice and policy and is open to anyone interested in the further development of sustainable living and settlement models.

Desafios e sucessos de aprendizagem

The challenge lies in the complexity of the OPD model and its legal framework. Learning outcome: Structured analysis and comparison enable the clear application of relevant principles to other contexts.
