City Nature Challenge Luxembourg 2026

Cities around the world are working together to share their observations of nature as part of the City Nature Challenge. Participants take photos and upload them to iNaturalist.lu. This helps to expand the databases on Luxembourg’s flora and fauna!

In Luxembourg, the CNC is coordinated by the National Museum of Natural History. A number of events will be organised in Luxembourg by various organisations, including CELL!

 

Friday 24 April

Introduction to biodiversity surveys | 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm

Come and try out different methods for identifying wild flora and fauna in a garden. If it rains, the workshop will be postponed until Monday.

The 48 Hours of Urban Agriculture in Luxembourg!

Since 2024, Luxembourg has joined the 48-Hour Urban Agriculture Festival to celebrate, together, urban gardening in all its forms.

This festival has been designed by and for citizens committed to the food transition in Luxembourg. A number of events will be organised to highlight key players in the food transition and to introduce everyone to urban gardening, biodiversity in the city and local food.

 

Saturday 25 April

The Power of Herbs | 10.00 am to 11.30 am

Come and discover the different facets of aromatic plants, from their role in ecosystems to their place on our plates! We’ll take this opportunity to photograph the pollinators visiting the garden’s aromatic plants, as part of the City Nature Challenge.

How to improve soil – the example of the Bettembourg community garden | 10.00 am to 12.00 pm

Through a tour of the Bettembourg garden, we will take a look at the soil and all the amendments

Solar panel installation workshop and second-hand solar panel exchange | 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm

Want to switch to solar energy without breaking the bank? Join us for a friendly and practical afternoon focusing on solar panel installation!

2.00 pm to 4.00 pm | A comprehensive presentation covering everything you need to know about installing photovoltaic panels (connection, self-consumption, batteries, DIY, etc.), followed by a practical demonstration of how to connect the panels.
From 4.00 pm | If you’re ready to take the plunge straight away, second-hand panels will be on sale at the venue, ranging from 280 to 320 W in capacity, priced from €35 to €45 each (to be reserved and collected later in Bissen).
Whether you’re just curious, a DIY enthusiast or ready to get started, this event is for you!

“Dandelion Jam” Workshop | 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm

On 25 April, we’ll have the chance to discover dandelions together: their benefits, their various uses and what this plant can offer us in our daily lives. The workshop will focus on making dandelion jam, but we’ll also take a moment to talk about the other parts of the plant.

Guided tour of the Mersch forest garden followed by a potluck dinner | 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm

4.00 pm to 5.00 pm | Are you interested in the concept of the forest garden? That’s perfect! During this session, you will learn:
- the theory behind this permaculture technique.
- the steps involved
- how to put it into practice, drawing on the experience of the Mersch forest garden, planted in 2022.

This project is supported by L’Oeuvre and the MECB.

5.00 pm to 7.00 pm | Potluck dinner – Bring your own meal to share and enjoy a convivial moment in the Mersch community garden.
