TM Enercoop

Initiative phase: Well established and running

The 1st energy cooperative in southern Luxembourg.

TM Enercoop

TM EnerCoop offers a socially and environmentally responsible alternative to contemporary energy consumption and production practices. This cooperative energy project contributes to greater energy independence and the development of the local economy. It is helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, move away from fossil fuels and move away from nuclear power.

The 1st energy cooperative in southern Luxembourg

TM EnerCoop was developed as part of the Transition Minett citizens' initiative. TM EnerCoop has become a local producer of green energy, with seven citizen photovoltaic projects: one each in Esch-Lallange, Kayl-Tétange, Bettembourg and Differdange, and three in Schifflange.

The seven photovoltaic installations will each produce an average of 26,000 kWh of electricity per year. For the seven installations, this is roughly equivalent to what 2,100 households consume in a year to do their laundry or plug in a fridge. To ensure a regional approach, we have chosen solar panels of German origin.

Objectives

  • Promote renewable energies, to raise awareness of the need for an energy and civic transition
  • Produce green (renewable)energy locally, to increase our resilience and autonomy in relation to imports and the big monopoly companies
  • Democratise the means of production, because we are more than just consumers, we have local decision-making power (transparency, collective decision-making, project development, the possibility of becoming a cooperator, even for people of modest means, etc.).
  • Generate environmental, social and possibly financialbenefits
  • Develop and share our experience with other projects, because the energy transition requires a multiplication of different experiences
  • Ensure a coherent approach to the principles of sustainability, regional links and ecological and social criteria when purchasing equipment, savings, advice and communication.

Impact

TM Enercoop's community energy projects contribute to greater energy independence and the development of the local economy, because the money invested stays in the region and the skills are developed locally.

The project is helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, move away from fossil fuels and move away from nuclear power.
TM EnerCoop offers a socially and environmentally responsible alternative to current energy consumption and production practices. Currently 97% of the energy consumed in Luxembourg is imported, and only a tiny proportion of the energy produced in Luxembourg comes from renewable sources.
