Initiative phase: Early beginnings

The platform for sharing renewable energy

e-community

The e-community project is set in the context of a vision of tomorrow's energy world. The replacement of fossil fuels by renewable energies will cause a revolution in the economic structures of today's energy system. Generation will depend less and less on large generation plants and the associated infrastructure, but conversely on a multitude of small, decentralised power plants that are close to the consumer. These decentralised power plants will be owned by many small individual investors and the energy supply will be 'democratised'. This new world will and must be a networked world. Intelligence will replace relays and the electricity supplier of the future will be a service provider rather than a supplier.

In order to concretely advance the energy transition in Luxembourg, the initiators of this project are founding a platform that aims to utilise the electricity generated at the national level as locally as possible. This is a separate legal structure in the form of a cooperative dedicated to managing electricity trading. Initiators hope to make an important contribution to the energy transition in Luxembourg.
For the initiators, the platform is also intended to show that a different way of thinking is also needed in the organisation of elementary economic sectors. For this reason, the platform will strive for the status of an SIS and will be guided by the principles of the common good economy. This means that it will not be about the profit motive of the shareholders, but that the economic activity of the platform should serve the common good. This is also directly in line with the establishment of a decentralised, sustainable energy supply in the hands of citizens.

This IT platform offers the possibility

  • to exchange and share the electricity produced: the surplus of one customer can be consumed by another customer with a shortfall.
  • maximise the use of local production and thus reduce dependence on energy imports
  • better control of energy prices thanks to a significant reduction in the impact of volatility on international energy exchanges
  • a simple implementation of the legal framework to create an energy community for everyone.
